An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join our Outstanding CQC‑rated GP Practice. You will work closely with the Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, GPs, and the wider practice team to support safe, effective, and efficient medicines optimisation for our patient population.

Pharmacy Technicians play a vital role in complementing clinical pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Working under appropriate supervision, you will support national prescribing guidance, improve prescribing safety, and contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Your key responsibilities will include supporting repeat prescribing systems, medicines reconciliation following hospital discharge, and assisting with medication reviews within your scope of practice. You will undertake patient‑facing and patient‑supporting activities, including shared decision‑making conversations, medicines optimisation tasks, and providing advice to help patients use their medicines effectively.

Prerequisites

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Experience working as a Pharmacy Technician, ideally within General Practice or Primary Care
  • Good understanding of repeat prescribing systems and medicines optimisation
  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, clinical teams, and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Confident IT skills, including the use of clinical systems (EMIS/SystmOne desirable)
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development relevant to the role
  • Ability to travel independently between practice sites, where required

Job Description

Job Summary:

Pharmacy technicians play an important role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Pharmacy technicians are different to clinical pharmacists as they are not able to prescribe or make clinical decisions, instead working under supervision to ensure effective and efficient use of medicines, and help improve the safety of prescribing practice.

Pharmacy technicians will support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance. This will be achieved through undertaking clinical audits (e.g. use of antibiotics), supporting quality improvement measures and contributing to the Quality and Outcomes Framework and enhanced services. In addition, pharmacy technicians will assist in the delivery of medicines optimisation incentive schemes (e.g. medicines switches) and patient safety audits.

Pharmacy technicians will support practices with a range of services to get the best value from medicines by encouraging and implementing Electronic Prescriptions, safe repeat prescribing systems, and timely monitoring and management of high-risk medicines.

Pharmacy technicians’ core role responsibilities will cover clinical, and technical and administrative categories. The following sets out the key role responsibilities for pharmacy technicians:

Clinical:

  • Undertaking patient facing and patient supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use, through shared decision-making conversations with patients.
  • Carrying out medicines optimisation tasks including effective medicine administration (e.g. checking inhaler technique), supporting medication reviews and medicines reconciliation. Where required, utilise consultation skills to work in partnership with patients to ensure they use their medicines effectively.
  • Supporting medication reviews and medicines reconciliation for new care home patients and synchronising medicines for patient transfers between care settings, linking with local community pharmacists, and referring to the pharmacist for structured medication reviews.
  • Providing specialist expertise, where competent, to address both the public health and social care needs of patients, including lifestyle advice, service information, and help in tackling local health inequalities.
  • Taking a central role in the clinical aspects of shared care protocols and liaising with specialist pharmacists for more complex patients.
  • Supporting initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing.
  • Following approved local protocol and under supervision, manage the monitoring recall systems specific to certain treatments prescribed in the practice

Technical and Administrative:

  • Working with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient medicines optimisation, including implementing efficient ordering and return processes and reducing wastage.
  • Providing training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and support the delivery of Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD).
  • Developing relationships with other pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and members of the multi-disciplinary team to support integration of the pharmacy team across health and social care including primary care, community pharmacy, secondary care and mental health.
  • Supervising practice reception teams in sorting and streaming general prescription requests, so as to allow GPs and clinical pharmacists to review the more clinically complex requests.

Collaborative Working Relationships:

  • Recognises the roles of other colleagues within the organisation and their role to patient care
  • Demonstrates use of appropriate communication to gain the co-operation of relevant stakeholders (including patients, senior and peer colleagues, and other professionals, other NHS/private organisations eg PCNs)
  • Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team
  • Is able to recognise personal limitations and refer to more appropriate colleagues when necessary
  • Actively work toward developing and maintaining effective working relationships both within and outside the practice and locality
  • Foster and maintain strong links with all services across the locality
  • Explores the potential for collaborative working and takes opportunities to initiate and sustain such relationships
  • Demonstrates ability to integrate general practice with community and hospital pharmacy teams
  • Liaises with clinical pharmacists to benefit from peer support
  • Liaises with other stakeholders as needed for the collective benefit of patients

Health and Safety Risk Management:

The post-holder must comply at all times with the Practice’s Health and Safety Policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the organisations Incident Reporting System.

The post holder will comply with the Data Protection Act (1984) and the Access to Health Records Act (1990)

Special Working Conditions:

The post-holder is required to travel independently between practice sites (where applicable), and to attend meetings etc hosted by other agencies.

The post-holder may have contact with body fluids ie wound exudates, urine etc while in clinical practice.
